By Debby Ng: I don’t get to dive Singapore waters as often as I used to since I returned to university to work on a degree (one more year left!). However, I’ve not had to lose touch with our reefs because of the troves of photographers that enthusiastically visit our reefs every weekend. I rely on their images to continue to discover our reefs, and they have really taken me on a journey. Each time I receive photographs from divers, I sit at my desktop, big smile on my face, eyes wide open, thrilled to share their discoveries. Sometimes, in the quiet of my room, I let out a big “WoOoW!” almost teary eyed, completely blown away by their discoveries. (Above: Doto greenamyeri, 2017 © Gina Tan) Read the rest of this entry »

The Hantu Blog was recently invited to participate in an annual speaker series “Inspired by values” at GIC Singapore. I shared about our work to protect reefs in Singapore, and raise awareness amongst Singapore’s diving and non-diving community. One of the stories that moved the audience was of the reclamation of Terumbu Bayan, a large and beautiful reef that used to sit between Pulau Bukom and Pulau Hantu. One of the most important things that emerged from that incident, was the collaboration between local marine interest groups, JTC, and Shell. I also shared about how more dives and visits to our reefs and islands, only yielded more discoveries! In spite of the recent decades of rapid development, there was still much life in local waters. Our southern islands were visible from the 37th floor of Capitol Tower, so I’m hoping that when they gaze out their office windows in the future, they will contemplate the 1000s of wonderful creatures that call our ancient coral reefs home! Singapore waters are ALIVE! Read the rest of this entry »

By Ann Tan: A lot of people say, that there is no difference between day and night dives at Pulau Hantu (because low daytime visibility makes day dives seem like night dives!), but I think otherwise. Pulau Hantu has its own unique critters of the night. I became obsessed with night dives at Pulau Hantu about 6 -7 years ago after seeing some critters I’d never seen during the day. Since then, I have seized every opportunity for a night dive at Pulau Hantu.
Tonight’s dive site was a little bit special. I had been to this site only during the day but never at night. I’d expected to see more active head-shield slugs (Cephalaspidae) and “Shaun the Sheep” (Costasiella sp.) as I had seen these during the day. Most of all, I was hoping to encounter critters that were even more rare, and unseen during the day.
On my first dive, I made a beeline for a green blade of algae where I’d last seen “Shaun”. The first leaf I found, there Usagi (i.e. Costasiella usagi) was. Read the rest of this entry »

How to tell baby squid from pygmy squid? Pygmy squid mate, baby squid don’t (or so we think anyway). Marine biologist Dr. Jeffrey Low was leading a reef survey dive for Hantu Blog volunteers when he had what he claims to be one of his best dives at Pulau Hantu!

By Gina Tan: The sky is dark and I hear thunder in the background. I wait enthusiastically for the divers from NParks to arrive before we can head out to Pulau Satumu. Today, 17th April 2017 is going to be a very special day for me; it’s my once in a lifetime opportunity to experience coral spawning in Singapore waters! We board the boat, and I sigh a quiet relief as I watch the thunderclouds move inland; this means we can go ahead with our dives!

By Galen Mandez – An hour is all it takes to wake up, wash up, have a coffee, pop my gear into the boot and make my way down to the marina where our dive boat awaits. It’s a diving Sunday and a strange relief for someone much more accustomed to an eight-hour journey to Tioman.
It’s my first familiarisation dive with the Hantu Blog Divers and the weather is perfect as seven eager
divers pull out from the Marina and make the 30-minute journey to Hantu. Read the rest of this entry »
