Coral Relocation at Sultan Shoal

Date April 26, 2014

The Hantu Blog visited the reefs of Sultan Shoal this morning to participate in coral relocation efforts initiated by the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), and led by scientists from the Danish Hydrology Institute (DHI).

It’s the first time we are diving Sultan Shoal, and harvesting live coral. While participating in the Comprehensive Mega Marine Survey, we collected coral rubble, but extra care has to be taken when harvesting live coral as we want to minimise the impact and stress on these corals, so that they have a better chance at surviving the relocation process. Our Reefs in Motion

Date April 16, 2014

Here’s a sneek peek at what Singapore reefs look like underwater. This short video presentation was put together for the National Museum of Singapore‘s exhibition about the Islands of Singapore that will be launched and open to the public in June 2014!

Brittle Stars, Basket Stars, and Noble Snails

Date April 11, 2014

Underwater macro enthusiast Chay Hoon made a trip to Pulau Hantu over the weekend and returned with some amazing finds! She writes, “Joined a Hantu Bloggers dive trip that was private chartered by Cedric Sahetapy and Petrus Sahetapy‘s family. We had two good dives at the North jetty! The visibility was about 3-4m and with no current! Lots of stuff! Nudibranch, Flatworms, Octopus, Stingray etc! The Sahetapy’s saw a Mantis shrimp and Seahorse too!” Thanks to her, we get a glimpse of some of her extraordinary finds! Above: Nembrotha livingstonei, a recent new record in Singapore waters!

Over a Decade of Celebrating Singapore Waters!

Date March 26, 2014

We made it! The Hantu Blog is into its 11th year of sharing the wonders of Singapore’s marine life with schools, divers, and those who weren’t even thinking about what coral reefs are! Every year, in March, the Hantu Blog volunteers go crazy, and spend an entire day out at sea, doing as many as four dives to watch the ebb and flow of the reef over the course of a day. We do this to marvel at the ridiculously impressive diversity of marine life that make their home in the tiny little reefs around Pulau Hantu, but we also do it because we love diving in Singapore waters so much, what we would actually want to do something as crazy as this. Thank YOU for joining us on all our dives over the past years, and congratulations to all the dedicated volunteers who have devoted their time and their LIVES to learning, sharing, and documenting our wonderful Singaporean reefs. Happy 11th Birthday Hantu Blog! Read the rest of this entry »

Hantu Blog in Challenge Magazine

Date March 26, 2014

In July 2013, during a routine public dive at Pulau Hantu, divers came across a reef strewn with large, industrial, marine debris. We posted the findings on our blog, and reported the incident to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). The events that followed were unexpected, in a good way! Hantu Blog volunteers got to join MPA surveyors to understand more about the efforts that go on everyday to monitor and maintain our waterways, and eventually participated in a salvaging operation!

Word about this collaboration got picked up by Challenge Magazine, and we’re really glad they invited us to share this unique experience with other members of the civil service! Thank you, Challenge Magazine!

Sea Slugs and Stormy Seas

Date March 19, 2014

It didn’t look THAT great as we were approaching, but Pulau Satumu (Raffles Lighthouse) and the surrounding seas were placid enough for a decent dive. We could’ve done with some sunshine, but an overcast sky was OK, especially considering that it had been scorching for the past two months or so. We were coming back to these islands in the southernmost reaches of Singapore, with marine scientists from NParks and the Tropical Marine Sciences Institute, to see what more we could discover after a series of very fruitful dives from the previous weekend. The mission this time was to find the Clark’s anemonefish. I have never seen one in Singapore. Like the Saddlebacks at Pulau Hantu, they live in a carpet anemone. We were also hopeful that we’d be able to get more photographs of the Blacktip reef sharks we saw hanging around the islands. All that, and to take lots of nice pictures!

Diving Singapore’s Military Islands

Date March 14, 2014

There’s always excitement when we get to visit places we are usually not allowed to go! Pulau Satumu is a small island south of main Singapore island, and is the southernmost island of Singapore. It is the island on which Raffles Lighthouse stands. Its name means “One Tree” in Malay, Singapore’s national language. Read the rest of this entry »

Tentacles and naked gills

Date February 24, 2014

Despite the recent series of unfortunate oil spills that occurred in our southern waters, it was a glorious weekend for divers over at Pulau Hantu yesterday! Lots of nudibranches and other spineless creatures tried to be cryptic but could not escape the eyes of our experienced and nosy guides! Above is a series of photographs that depict the swimming behavior of the Starry bornella (Bornella stellifer) © Jeemee Goh/Hantu Blog Read the rest of this entry »
