The Hantu Blog was recently invited to participate in an annual speaker series “Inspired by values” at GIC Singapore. I shared about our work to protect reefs in Singapore, and raise awareness amongst Singapore’s diving and non-diving community. One of the stories that moved the audience was of the reclamation of Terumbu Bayan, a large and beautiful reef that used to sit between Pulau Bukom and Pulau Hantu. One of the most important things that emerged from that incident, was the collaboration between local marine interest groups, JTC, and Shell. I also shared about how more dives and visits to our reefs and islands, only yielded more discoveries! In spite of the recent decades of rapid development, there was still much life in local waters. Our southern islands were visible from the 37th floor of Capitol Tower, so I’m hoping that when they gaze out their office windows in the future, they will contemplate the 1000s of wonderful creatures that call our ancient coral reefs home! Singapore waters are ALIVE!

Many people were blown away by the marine life that can be found in Singapore. Someone remarked, “I didn’t know that reclamation works are burying our reefs!” I urged the audiance to use our creativity and innovation to find the best solution to meet our development needs. There’s always more than one way to solve a problem!

It is very confronting, to witness a reef that is centuries-old, and full of life, to be buried and silenced in the blink of an eye.
